12 died as motor ferry sinks off Verde Island 05/23/09

It’s 5 in the morning of May 24, 2009. I was doing my usual routine when one message on facebook caught my attention:

The CJPS (Child Jesus of Prague School) Family Mourns the Passing of Mrs. Carmelita Cad’s Eldest Daughter, NINA RICCI CADS. NINA RICCI, an alumna of CJPS was one of the 12 passengers of a motorized boat that capsized near Puerto Galera in Mindoro at around noon of May 23, 2009. PLEASE PRAY for HER and HER DEAR FAMILY.

At first I didn’t believe it, so I searched online about this tragedy. And it saddened me when online news confirmed the death of our friend NINA RICCI CADS.

According to the news, twelve people, including 3 children and a Japanese tourist, were killed after a large motorized outrigger capsized near Mindoro Island on Saturday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

Chief Supt. Luisito Palmera, police chief for Region 4B (Mimaropa), said in a text message to reporters in Manila that the MB Commando 6 sank at about noon near Verde Island, 85 miles (135 kilometers) south of Manila.

I’m still in shock.  It was really unexpected.  I know Nina since elementary days.  She’s the daughter of one of our teachers. And her sister is my barkada (peer).

Anyway,  may God give her eternal rest and may her soul rest in peace! My heartfelt condolences to her family.

Update:
The coast guard officials said, “the boat had only 42 people on its manifest, indicating that many people had boarded without being listed.”

It was also reported that the owner of the ill-fated motorized ferry boat which capsized Saturday off Verde Island in Batangas and drowning 12 people has gone into hiding.

Please pray for all the victims and the survivors of this terrible tragedy.

Update:

I went to her wake and I’ve talked to her mom. I learned that Nina was recently (just two weeks ago) promoted as supervisor. Her mom was really shocked, they never expect it. There are no signs.

I guess we really don’t know when is our time. Where ever you are, what ever you’re doing, it may be you’re in rv camping, or while you’re sleeping. If it is your time, no one can stop it. God has a purpose for everything.

this is so sad. what a useless tragedy. all because a boat operator does not follow rules. i know mahirap ang pera ngayon pero sana naman naisip nila gano kalaking pahirap mawalan ng kapamilya. my friend told a similar story of how boats to and from puerto galera are always overloaded and in fact, i have ridden boats from there as well and have borne witness to this terrible practice. my prayers go to the families of the victims

Sana hindi na maulit ang ganoong klase ng trahedya. Nakakalungkot mawalan ng isang mabuti at masayahing pinsan na katulad ni Nina.
